Musica Musica, Viva la Musica

Aight suckas, couldn’t get any inspiration today from the news but I remembered thinking about giving you some musical dribble from my recent pirating exploits. Hopefully some one from Rolling Stone picks up my gilded analysis of these bands, but I’ll be happy to share my infinite knowledge with you Joe 6 pack. PS Joe, you drink like a pussy.

The Fireman- Electric Arguments: First bold statement- solid contender for album of the year. Second bold statement- Paul McCartney might sound as cool as he did with the Beatles, possibly cooler. The sound is folksy, electronic, and moving, kind of like String Cheese folk-flutters fused with the heaviness of the Raconteurs and the swagger of the Dandy’s. Any way you listen to it, its distinct and edgy, and its Sir Paul back with a vengeance. I don’t know how old the dude is now, but he’s still got great energy to his voice, and a new kind of raspy depth that makes it quite different than his formative years. Sir Paul may have started talking to some new producers and realized he still kicked ass at making music, because this beats the piss out of most of his other projects. I just hope they keep smoking what they’re smoking and release more, cuz its sexy.

The Flaming Lips- Christmas on Mars: Should be renamed Christmas on shrooms. Just from the song titles you know you’re in for a wild one, but this one is especially out there for the Lips. It still has some of their components that made them famous , but in a much more orchestral and lyrically void way. I would definitely recommend it for big fans, but for a first listener this would not be a good introduction to the band. The album is a score for a movie, which after reading helped explain the lack of lyrics and continuity it maintains through songs, but I would pick up a bag of grass if you want to take a ride all the way through this cosmic thoroughfare. Watch out for spacecraft.

REM- Murmur: I haven’t listened to REM in three years, and after listening to this album I can’t figure out why. The lyrics are poppy and catch your ears, and the band sounds like they’ve mastered their sound and musical styles. It has classic REM components and is definitely the type of album to start your day to. There is just something to be said for the REMesque guitar progression, and you’ll be pleased to find plenty of it here. If you only want to download a single, I’d go for Catapult or Moral Kiosk, my personal favs.
